Second day in Taiwan

After posting yesterday, Ralph and I walked around for a while. Most people seemed to care less about us, but we got a few gawky stares. Walking on the sidewalks is a little scary as people ride their bikes and occasionally scooters. Stop lights are an adventure. The crosswalk signals show a little green man with a countdown of when you can cross the street. The less time remains, the quicker he moves. When the lights change for traffic, there is a 15-second blast when all the scooters go first, then the cars. People ride the scooters alone or with several people and kids. Few helmets, but for protection, several people wore surgical face masks. What would that do in an accident?

We visited the flower and jade market yesterday. The orchids were beautiful. I bought two plants for our room for about $10 each. We haven't done any shopping yet, but we enjoyed looking at all the jewelry.

Ralph took a VERY long nap, even though we said we wouldn't. After almost 5 hours, he stumbled out of the bedroom, looking like he had been on a week-long bender. I spent the time unpacking, getting gifts ready, and watching TV. We ended up ordering room service consisting of traditional Taiwan dishes, beef and noodles and Taiwan yellow noodles, like a stir fry. It was all very good and we finished the meal with Halloween candy.

I went to bed at 9. I have no idea how long I went without real sleep. Ralph woke at about 4 am and, after slamming the lid on the toilet and turning on the lights, went to read. He woke me at 6:30 as I finally put in earplugs and an eye mask. I'm still unsure why he woke me, but I think it was from boredom. We just finished breakfast and are meeting Dena and her family to review what we want to do for the week. Mr. Yeh made us a schedule, but we don't care about things like the zoo or SeaWorld-type park. We figure we can go to San Diego and do the parks there. There are several "authentic" towns we would like to visit. It's probably their counterpart to Virginia City. Also, a town is known for its pottery and tea.

Today at noon, Mr Yeh is meeting us to visit local temples.

It's still hard to believe we are in Taiwan and will meet Anna in just two more days. It's hard being this close and not having her with us, but it's a treat also, almost like a little vacation.

I'm going to have Ralph try and upload a few photos. I'll post this separately.

This is Grandma Nancy and Ryan. We just read your blog for today. I hope this works, as I've never done a blog before. Ryan wants to say "I love you (Mom and Dad) very much and miss them too." He wants to know when you will get little sister and be back. He is sad you aren't here and was disappointed when your cell phones didn't work. We are checking off the calendar to count the days. "I had pizza for dinner."

Is this the best way to communicate or should I use Tami's email? How many hours different are you?

Ed and I got back from our trip without difficulty. Hope you have as safe as travel.

Love, Mom
